The difference is that a comforter is filled with poly fiber filler and a duvet is filled with down feathers. Yes. You can buy duvet covers most everywhere… even WalMart now has some nice ones.
I prefer Duvet to comforters because you can change the duvet cover every season if you want to, you can fluff up the feathers just by shaking it, and it keeps you warm in winter, cool in summer.
I **** comforters because the filling always ends up flat, you can’t easily change the look (you have to change the comforter), and I always prefer natural to synthetic.
Oh… and no matter what anyone says, you don’t have to get the duvet dry cleaned. I have washed my down duvets for years now, in the washing machine on the bulky items cycle. Just make certain that you put it on low in the dryer, shake it out every now and again during the drying time and make sure it is completely dry before putting it back inside it’s duvet cover.
A comforter is a filled cover. I might be filled with down, or a down alternative. It can be white or any other decorator color. A duvet is basically a cover for a comforter. Think great big pillowcase that closes at the open end with ties, or buttons, or a zipper. I protects your comforter and can be removed for laundering. It can change out the look of your bedding without the need to purchase a new comforter. They are mostly used to cover those expensive down comforters that are made in white and off white fabrics, but could actually be used to cover a decorator comforter for a change of pace.

A duvet is like a big pillow without a pillow case. They can be filled with poly or feathers.
A comforter is a fluffy quilt.
