I was thinking I could buy fabric or bed-sheets and sew it into a twin duvet for my daybed. Will this be really difficult (I have a sewing machine)?

No since it is straight line sewing, it isn’t difficult to make a duvet cover in the manner you described. You have a choice as to how to make the end open, however. You can sew on buttons and make button holes which is the difficult way. Or you can use hook and loop tape on each side and straight line sew that on which is much easier. I also think it gives a cleaner look and is certainly more comfortable on the feet.

Not at all. It’s like making a gigantic pillowcase. However, with the price of fabric, you might want to save your money and buy one online:

Here’s a stripe damask nice one for $27

See? Search for yourself. There are TONS of different colors and styles. Most of them are under $40.

I would think it would be quite simple. Just google how to make a duvet cover and you will find a ton of websites offering instructions.
Go through a few of them until you get the basic steps clear in your mind of the construction and then start shopping for sheets/or material. Basically a straight stitch on three sides and you can choose how to finish the top. Buttons if you are handy with that, ties a bit easier, or velcro (don’t get the sticky back if you plan to sew it)
The top is usually covered by the pillows and shams anyway.
    good luck!
