  1. Butterfly Lover Says:

Essentially, a coverlet is several layers of fabric stitched together which cover the bed. A duvet is two layers stuffed with either down or fiberfill. Some duvets are decorative others are plain white and go inside a decorative duvet cover.

A coverlet is a relatively heavy but thin, quilt type of blanket that has little or no fill (if no fill, then it is several layers of fabric stitched together). It is usually used mostly for decoration as it has does little to insulate — there is usually a blanket for actual warmth underneath the coverlet and above the sheets.

A duvet is basically two layers of cloth with a loose, insulating stuffing, like feathers. It is very plain in style — usually just plain white cloth with some broadly spaced stitching to somewhat prevent the loose fill from shifting and creating “cold”, bare spots . However, there is also a duvet COVER and sometimes people will use these interchangeably even though they are quite different. A duvet cover is simply two layers of cloth, usually decorative and often thick, that holds the duvet or comforter (like a pillowcase holds a pillow). A duvet cover by itself is pretty flimsy on its own and is entirely for decoration. A duvet, or comforter, is usually thick and entirely for warmth (unless you love plain white fabric.

Btw, the difference between a comforter and a duvet is that a comforter usually has the decoration of a duvet cover (or at least color), the feel and fill of a duvet, and usually the stitching of a loose-fill quilt where minor shifting is desirable to make it fluffier (many lines of stitching, but with wide spaces between the lines)… If there are only a few lines of stitching in a comforter, it is because the chosen fill doesn’t easily shift around and so they don’t bother with more.

If you are trying to decide between them, a coverlet/blanket combo will be thin, moderate weight, and slightly warmer than just the blanket — it is also easy to make the bed look neatly made. A duvet/duvet cover will be medium to thick, light to heavy weight, and will be as warm as the amount and type of fill you get — it also can look very comfy, but it takes more effort to make a bed look neatly made with one.
