How do you stop a feather/down duvet crackling every time you move? What is the difference between a duvet, quilt, and a comforter?

Rich asked:

I was shopping for a bed set on Bed Bath and Beyond,
and I found that these items are all similar,
I was just wondering if anyone knew the difference!

A duvet is usually plain and is placed inside a duvet cover (which has the design on it). A comforter is usually what the design is on. A bedspread is mearly for decoration, to go on top of a duvet (without it’s cover).

A Duvet you can get different togs (warmth) and they are usually thick, I dunno what a comforter is, if it’s the same as a blanket, it’s the thing Linus (from Snoopy)holds and is usually woollen and a bedspread is thin like a sheet.

A comforter covers the bed past the mattress but not to the floor; you need a dust ruffle with it if you want to cover from the end of the comforter to the floor. A bedspread covers the bed to the floor. A duvet is also called a comforter cover. It is basically 2 sheets sewn together to make a comforter pillowcase. The comforter goes inside the duvet, just like a pillow to a case or sham. Comforters tend to be fluffier than bedspreads. And, generally, a duvet has a smooth surface unlike a comforter or bedspread which may have a pattern sewn into it. Guess those 2 years in department store linens have finally paid off :)

A bedspread goes to the floor. They are available in different thickness, colours and patterns. Making a bed with a bedspread is easy and looks neat.
A comforter also comes in a variety of colours, materials and thicknesses. It can be synthetic( good for those who have allergies)or feathered. They require a dust ruffle.
A duvet is synthetic or feathered. It is sold usually by weight. They require a duvet cover;you can wash a duvet cover more easily than the duvet itself especially if its feathered. The feathers eventually come true no matter what the thread count. The feathers gather in patches I find the bed never looks good it looks messy. If you go with synthetic there is less chance of bunching and sneezing. The advantage of the duvet is that they are very warm.

a duvet is a way to change the look of your comforter with out buying a new comforter IE a pillow case for you comforter. you comforter is the big main blanket you have on your bed and a bed spread is a thin blanket that people usually have folded at the foot of there bed for extra cold nights

A Duvet is the same as a Comforter - duvet is just the French word for comforter. Duvets are always designed to be placed inside a protective cover, but comforters may or may not be designed as such. Some companies market duvet covers using just the word duvet which is where the confusion comes from. But read up on it on Wikipedia (links below) for the definitive answer.

Duvets were originally only filled with down, but now silk, cotton, etc are also used.
